If the Noise Research wing of rock 'n' roll can boast an actual pop group, this long-lived New Zealand trio may be it. One of the first bands to sculpt eerie, hallucinogenic soundscapes using de-tuned guitars, Bailter Space now typically veers between punky blasts of smeared sound and dreamy, overtone-washed pop. "Solar.3" is the band's seventh LP, and it largely revisits the approach of the last two Bailter records. "Strand" is a breathy reverie wafted over a hypnotic chord progression and striking, flute-like ax fills, while "Trekka" slowly builds a wistful ballad into a burst of otherworldly distortion. On the other hand, "Live for You" is an unassumingly simple, mid-tempo pop tune. "Solar.3" breaks no new ground, but it does reaffirm Bailter Space's unique avant-pop mastery.
The purpose of this blog is to expose you to the unique and unrepeatable New Zealand scene known as "Dunedin Sound" that emerged in New Zealand in the early eighties. This space takes over from wonderful blogs that in their time served to make known to the world some of the most significant bands and records of that period. The present collection is dedicated to all those kiwi bands -many of them already forgotten- who, without knowing it, wrote a very important page in the history of music.
